The project
The “Urban Peripheries” project represents a great opportunity, an incentive to reactivate the process of urban fusion of the constituent nuclei of Imperia, foreshadowing the connection of areas that do not communicate with each other, the reconstruction of the continuity of linear infrastructures and the recovery of the inner suburbs of the city. The project was developed in agreement with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) – the owner of the disused railway areas. The intervention area concerns the narrow coastal strip between San Lorenzo al Mare and the two urban centers of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, in order to eliminate the urban and landscape degradation caused by the dismantling of the 6 km of railway line which for decades has been the dividing line between the suburbs. The intervention is extended to the Urban Park adjacent to the east of the intervention area and to two disused, degraded and squatted settlements. The bicycle/pedestrian path will be a true local public transport hub that will decongest traffic on the crowded streets of Imperia city, with a zero land consumption strategy, a green line as a link between the suburbs and the center, able to transform a disused infrastructure into a connective green mobility axis. The central objective of the project is precisely to bring the different parts of Imperia urban fabric closer together, identifying this way the starting point of an identity-building process that is essential to trigger a true urban regeneration process.
